"60+"
  • 60+ Fields, including:
    • Location
    • Drainage
    • Habitat Parameters
    • Date
    • Status
    • Source of Information

"Sources of Data"
  • Sources of Data

Geo-referenced
Locational Data
  • All data are geo-referenced to the finest scale possible
    • State
    • County
    • HUC (2, 4, 6, 8-digit)
    • Point (latitude/longitude)
5
Relational Structure
  • Specimen
    • Species
    • Site information
    • Collection information
    • Habitat information
    • Source of info (Refs, pers.comm., voucher specimen)

Earliest Record
  • Nation
  • State
  • County
  • Drainage
  • Location
19
Year Accuracy
  • Actual
  • Estimated (mid 80’s = 1985)
  • Publication year (used when no date is given)

Things to remember
  • Keep in mind how the data will be used
    • If a species occurs lake-wide; enter a record for each state surrounding the lake
    • Otherwise, record won’t show up on a state query
23
Things to remember
  • Always search to see if an entry already exists in the database before creating a new one.
    • Purpose of a relational database – avoid duplication
    • Can create problems if you don’t; ex) new species – won’t show on query

24
Things to remember
  • Do not edit or make changes to any sites or collections! – unless you are positive there is an error
    • The site or collection you change may be related to many other records; therefore you change not only that one record but others as well - incorrectly
25
Alert System
  • Currently under development…
26
Internal Alert
  • If a new species record is added
    • Nation
    • State
    • County
    • Drainage
27
Examples of Alerts
28
Alert System
  • Currently internal
  • Register for alerts by taxonomic group, species or state
  • Could add one for Great Lakes
