The Asian Swamp eel,
Monopterus albus, is native to tropical and temperate climates of eastern and
southern Asia. It is now well
established in several canals in the Miami, Florida area over the past few
years. They can grow to about 3 m and
prey on fish, crayfish, shrimp, frogs, tadpoles, etc. They are capable of
breathing air and can travel short distances over land. No one is sure how it got here. The aquarium industry does not appear to
raise them so maybe it was brought in as a food fish by some ethnic group. At
this point the impacts are unknown.
