Common Name: a tubificid worm

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Dorsal hair chaetae are absent. Dorsal needles begin on segment 5. There are 2 to 4 ventral chaetae on segment 2 and usually 1 or 2 on the rest. All of the anterior ventral chaetae have the upper tooth about twice as long as the lower tooth. When mature there are 2 or 3 penial chaetae on segment 5, which are thickened, but not as modified as Paranais litoralis. There are no eyes. Coelomocytes are present. The body wall non-papillate, but has transverse furrows, which may hold a thin layer of foreign matter. (Gustafson 1996)

Size: Up to 9 mm.
