Hyphessobrycon serpae   Durbin 1908

Common Name: serpae tetra

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: According to Géry (1977), the genus Hyphessobrycon contains approximately 65 species and needs systematic revision. Hyphessobrycon serpae itself represents a species complex. See Géry for an identification key and a color photograph. A color photograph was also published in Axelrod et al. (1985).

Size: 4 cm.

Native Range: Tropical America. Central Amazon basin and Guianas (Géry 1977).



Nonindigenous Occurrences: The only record is that of two specimens taken in Florida from a canal at the upper end of Mill Bayou, Bay County, in September 1989 (FL DNR, personal communication).

Means of Introduction: These fish were either aquarium releases or fish that escaped from a fish farm.

Status: eported from Florida.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.

Remarks: This is a well-known aquarium species. There are no known voucher specimens.
