Neogobius fluviatilis is a potential competitor with benthic fish species native to its introduced ranges in Central Europe. However, results of a competition experiment suggest that monkey goby is a habitat generalist and interspecific competition might not be a strong factor because of dissimilarities in spatial foraging and shelter preferences among these species.
