Fish Sampling Protocols

Two complimentary methods are used:  electrofishing and seining.

The NAWQA program uses 6.4 mm as a standard mesh size for seines.  Three sized of seines are commonly used: 3 X 1.2 m; 7.6 or 9.1 X 1.2 m.  The size of the seine used depends on stream characteristics, and must be tailored to each site.  Three seine collections are taken and combined for each location.
