Protocol for monitoring of marine benthos: intertidal and subtidal macrofauna

This document includes an extensive discussion of how to choose sample site, size, frequency, and method.  A number of different methods are discussed, including dredges, corers, graps, and photography.  Only general guidelines are given – collectors are encouraged to tailor a sampling program to their study.

In soft-bottomed habitats, grabs or corers are recommended.  In hard-bottomed habitats, photography is recommended.  Many different types and techniques of grabs, corers and cameras are presented.

Three samples are collectd for benthic species composition and abundance.

A 1/25 (0.04) m2 stainless steel, Young-modified Van Veen Grab sampler is used to collect sediments.  The sample is sieved through a 0.5 mm sieve in the field.

This Rapid Assessment used scrapers, grabs and a custom benthic sled to sample benthos, as well as plankton nets to sample the water column.

An Ekman Grab was used to obtain non-quantitative bottom samples that were sieve-washed and sorted on site.
