GROWTH FORMS OF NONINDIGENOUS
MARSILEA, WATER-CLOVER
Marsilea
produces floating leaves when rooted underwater.
Marsilea mutica, the species pictured above, is unique for its two-colored
leaf pattern. Its floating leaves may extend over 6 cm wide. Like other Marsilea
members, it also grows along moist shorelines.
Some Marsilea species develop emersed
leaves when rooted underwater.
Here Marsilea minuta extends leaves 15 cm above the water surface.

Members of the water-clover family also
exist well as land plants.
Here Marsilea vestita forms a dense lawn in a vacant
lot.
