Osmerus eperlanus is the most important fish intermediate/transport host of the sealworm Pseudoterranova decipiens in the Elbe estuary and probably also in adjacent coastal waters of the Wadden Sea. Sealworms are potentially capable of causing anisakiasis-like symptoms in humans (e.g. abdominal pain, nausea, fever) when consumed in lightly cooked or raw fish products.
