In the laboratory setting, Anguillicola crassus can hybridize with Anguillicola novaezelandiae, another invasive swim bladder nematode originally from New Zealand now found in Europe. A. novaezelandiae infections do not seem to damage eel swim bladders. Hybridization could lead to a prevalence of A. novaezelandiae in A. novaezelandiae populations.
