Impact Description | Atherina boyeri probably starts to face intense interspecific competition for food in autumn. Specialized predation of A. boyeri on fish larvae, especially in autumn, is likely an ecological adaptation of this species against food limitation. Through this behavior, A. boyeri would reduce inter- and intra-specific competition by removing a number of competitors that utilize the same food sources and thus raise its energy gains for overwintering by consuming food of higher nutrient value. |
