Impact DescriptionIn Lake Okeechobee, Eichhornia crassipes displaced native bulrush and shaded out native submersed plants that are important habitat for fish, waterfowl, and other animals. Water hyacinth infestations also interfere with the nesting and feeding habits of the endangered Everglades snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus), and in extreme cases can push over or uproot emergent vegetation in which kites build their nests.
