Impact DescriptionResults of a lab study suggest that the culturing of Procambarus virginalis in closed systems may be a sustainable alternative for crayfish aquaculture. The chitinous exoskeleton of marbled crayfish can be harvested for its use in other industries (i.e. bandaged, filler materials, biodegradable plastics). The exoskeleton of marbled crayfish has three times more chitin than the main sources of commercially produced chitin.
