Density of phytoplankton (except cyanobacteria) was always higher outside S. aloides than between rosettes, both in surveys, in situ field experiments and laboratory microcosm experiments. This study concluded that allelopathic substances are excreted by S. aloides. The negative effect may be amplified in natural environments due to other stresses such as shading and grazing.

Stratiotes aloides affected several phytoplankton species: two cyanobacterial strains (toxic and non-toxic Microcystis aeruginosa), one green alga (Scenedesmus obliquus) and one eustigmatophyte (Nannochloropsis limnetica). The overall effect (8-51%) was measured by the extension in doubling time of initial biovolume.
