The yabby (Cherax destructor) is a frequent prey item for predatory aquatic birds. A study conducted on a crayfish farm in Australia reported predation by a heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), two ibis species (Threskiornis aethiopica and T. spinicollis), and a spoonbill (Platalea flavipes). Observations suggest that three cormorant species (Phalacrocorax carbo, P. melanoleucos, and P. varius) also preyed upon the yabby.

A field study in Australia observed low concentrations of two PFASs, perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorohexane sulfonate, in the yabby (Cherax destructor). The presence of these pollutants in the edible tissues of the yabby suggest this species may bioaccumulate and transfer PFASs up the food web.
