Limnoperna fortunei has been shown to physically foul living unionids through settlement on their shells. This impairs movement and restricts their ability to open their valves, thus depriving them of food and oxygen.

In the Upper Paraná River, native freshwater sponges compete with and overgrow Limnoperna fortunei. The following six species of freshwater sponge were observed overgrowing or surrounding L. fortunei: Corvospongilla seckti, Drulia cf. brownii, Oncosclera navicella, Sterrastrolepis brasiliensis, Tubella repens, and Uruguaya corallioides.

The shell production by Limnoperna fortunei decreases flow velocity, increases shear strength and increases sedimentation. These ecosystem engineering effects lead to spatial interference competition with native bivalves, reed roots, etc..

Field
Limnoperna fortunei has been found to attach to a native crab, Trichodactylus borellianus, which leads to higher energetic costs for locomotion and reduces ability to escape predators.
