In the early 1900's, the Welland canal created a route for Petromyzon marinus to enter the upper Great Lakes because they were albe to bypass a natural barrier at Niagra Falls. After this invasion, the fisheries in the Great Lakes collapsed within a few decades of the Welland Canal construction.
