The Nonindigenous Occurrences section of the NAS species profiles has a new structure. The section is now dynamically updated from the NAS database to ensure that it contains the most current and accurate information. Occurrences are summarized in Table 1, alphabetically by state, with years of earliest and most recent observations, and the tally and names of drainages where the species was observed. The table contains hyperlinks to collections tables of specimens based on the states, years, and drainages selected. References to specimens that were not obtained through sighting reports and personal communications are found through the hyperlink in the Table 1 caption or through the individual specimens linked in the collections tables.

Peckoltia sp. Miranda Ribeiro, 1912

Common name: clown pleco

Taxonomy: available through www.itis.govITIS logo

Identification: Peckoltia includes about 12 species; the group is in need of taxonomic revision (Armbruster 1997). Distinguishing characteristics of the genus and a key to loricariid genera were provided by Burgess (1989) and Armbruster (1997). Color photographs appeared in Sands (1984), Burgess (1989), and Ferraris (1991). Armbruster (1997) noted that it is commonly confused with some Panaque; as such, he concluded that the aquarium literature should be viewed with skepticism.

Size: 22 cm.

Native Range: Tropical America. The Amazon and Orinoco river basins (Armbruster 1997).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: A species identified as Peckoltia was taken from Manoa Stream, Oahu, Hawaii, during 1990-1991 surveys by the state; there was also an earlier unconfirmed report from Kaukonahua Stream, Oahu, in 1989 (Devick 1991b). There are many occurences on Oahu (Mundy 2005).

Means of Introduction: Probable aquarium release.

Status: Reported from Hawaii.

Impact of Introduction: The impacts of this species are currently unknown, as no studies have been done to determine how it has affected ecosystems in the invaded range. The absence of data does not equate to lack of effects. It does, however, mean that research is required to evaluate effects before conclusions can be made.

Remarks: Many members of this genus are popular aquarium fishes. However, some Peckoltia species are difficult to separate from members of the loricariid genus Panaque. As such, the Hawaiian record may actually be a Panaque species. Panaque maccus is the common clown pleco in the ornamental fish trade (J. Armbruster, personal communication). There are no known voucher specimens.
