Impact DescriptionMayan Cichlids in South Florida are host to nematode parasites of the genus Contracaecum. These parasites infect the stomachs of piscivorous birds and mammals; their eggs are shed through the faeces of their host. Eggs are consumed by invertebrates and move up the food chain until they reach their intermediate hosts, fish.
