Size: up to 100 mm long

Native Range: The entire Mississippi drainage from western New York to South Dakota to Louisiana; also Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

Means of Introduction: Probably migrated naturally via the Erie Canal.

Impact of Introduction: The impacts of this species are currently unknown, as no studies have been done to determine how it has affected ecosystems in the invaded range. The absence of data does not equate to lack of effects. It does, however, mean that research is required to evaluate effects before conclusions can be made.

Remarks: Found in small streams to medium-sized and large rivers in coarse sand and gravel as deep as 15 feet.  Breeds from May to August; host fishes for glochidia can be white crappie, black crappie, and bluegill.
