Impact DescriptionTilapia zillii have been used for biological control of aquatic weeds in California, showing a preference for Sago Pondweed (Stuckenia pectinata as Potamogeton pectinatus), Southern Naiad (Najas quadalupensis), and Chara sp. are preferred over Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). They also consume mosquito and midge larvae and pupae, both incidentally and directly, and thus have been used for mosquito control.
