Impact DescriptionTilapia zillii and T. mossambicus have been used to control aquatic weeds (filamentous algae, mat-forming algae, Southern Naiad, and Sago Pondweed), and Chara sp. in California rice ponds, with mixed cultures being more effective than T. mossambicus alone. Weed control was more effective for weed and insect control than herbicides, with the fish later being harvested for use as food or fertilizer.
