Impact DescriptionTilapia (Oreochromis spp.) comprised 31-42% of the fresh fish biomass in two fish markets in Nicaragua, while native species reported from earlier market surveys were no longer present. Tilapia were harvested both for the local market and for export through wholesalers to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Body size, and thus marketability of native cichlids such as Amphilophus c.f. citrinellus has declined since the establishment of tilapias.
