Impact DescriptionIn commercial aquaculture breeding experiments, female koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) interbreeding with male bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) resulted in two new “crucian” carp-like homodiploid fish, a new type of triploid hybrid, and a new type of tetraploid hybrid. The formation of new polyploids could facilitate new adaptations and increase genetic diversity.
