Impact TypePredation/Herbivory
Study TypeObservational
Study LocationField
Impact DescriptionHigh-throughput sequencing analysis of gut contents indicated that bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) will rely on zooplankton in a mesotrophic lake and phytoplankton in a eutrophic lake. In a mesotrophic lake, the most abundant plankton classes in the gut contents of bighead carp was Diaptomidae and Chroococcales. In a eutrophic lake, the most abundant plankton classes in the gut contents of bighead carp was Chroococcales. As algae abundance increased in the water column, bighead carp consumed more phytoplankton.
