Impact ID6065
Impact TypeRecreation
Study TypeAnecdotal
Study LocationN/A
Impact DescriptionThe diet of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) overlaps with that of planktivorous species (fish and invertebrates) and to some extent with that of the young of virtually all native fishes. If food resources become limiting, bighead carps may compete directly with these native species. The decline of native species that are important as sport and food species are bound to have a negative economic impact on recreational angling and other industries that benefit from sport fishing, such as tourism.
