Impact ID7545
Impact TypeCompetition
Study TypeAnecdotal
Study LocationN/A
Impact DescriptionOnce established in inland lakes, Nitellopsis obtusa forms dense mats of vegetation that completely cover the lake bottom. Mats of N. obtusa correspond with a dramatic decrease in the biomass of competing species. Although specific surveys have not been conducted yet, there is serious concern for inland lake populations of native species that are dependent on lake bottom habitat, including minnows, logperch, darters, clams, and other invertebrates.
