Impact DescriptionThe consumption of periphyton by Faxonius rusticus outside its native range has been shown to create a trophic cascade that impacts many trophic levels, organisms, and ecological interactions. Periphyton productivity showed an increase when F. rusticus is present, the resulting algal blooms in invaded areas are likely the result of F. rusticus being a much less efficient grazer than the macroinvertebrates it replaces.
