The snail was first reported by graduate students of Carl Ernst at George Mason University who were conducting an inventory of certain taxononmic groups at Fort Belvoir. Citation: Ernst, C. H., J. C. Wilgenbusch, M. Sommerfield, P. S. Miller, T. P. Boucher. 1994. An Inventory and Distributional Study of the Fish, Bats, and Aquatic Macroinvertebrates at Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, Virginia; 1993-1994. Unpublished report submitted to U. S. Army, Fort Belvoir. May be a subspecies (C. c. malleata).
