| Comments | We were informed by the Education Department at LUMCON in Cocodrie, LA that their trawl cruises had been pulling up "tons" of spotted jellies in the passes between Terrebonne Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. They were first seen on June 21st, and increased in number through the week. BTNEP took scientists from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Auburn University to the area yesterday (June 30th). We were not equipped with a trawl net, but we found dozens of individuals at or near the surface, scattered widely but consistently, in the areas of Whiskey Pass, Wine Island Pass, and east of Raccoon Point. Most specimens measured 40-50 cm in bell diameter, but some smaller individuals (c. 25 cm) were seen. In roughly five hours on the water, we saw between 75 and 100 individuals. (Also saw one moon jelly and one cannonball.) |
