NAS logo - click to go to the NAS home page Marine fishes (Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Vertebrata) may occupy a variety of environments including oceans, coasts, reefs, and estuaries. Impacts of many of these species are mostly unknown except for Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles), which has spread throughout the Atlantic seaboard, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Lionfish can compete with and consume native fishes, causing decreases in native fish diversity and abundance.
